چکیده

Numerical experiments are conducted for two-dimensional model problems of tsunami generation by underwater slides and slumps. These problems consist of a semi-ellipse, translating down an incline with a prescribed center of mass motion. For each problem, this motion is derived as a function of geometric and material parameters, and we calculate corresponding characteristic tsunami amplitudes. Landslide deformation is shown to have negligible effect on these amplitudes. Results of numerical experiments for the model problems are converted into predictive curve fits of characteristic tsunami amplitudes as functions of nondimensional governing parameters. Such results are useful for estimating tsunami hazard or for performing case studies. A method is proposed to input free surface displacements, modeled shortly after tsunami generation, into tsunami propagation models, in essence treating such submarine mass failures exactly like coseismic displacement.

Tsunami Generation by Submarine Mass Failure. I: Modeling, Experimental Validation, and Sensitivity Analyses

Numerical simulations are performed with a two-dimensional 2D fully nonlinear potential flow FNPF model for tsunami generation by two idealized types of submarine mass failure SMF : underwater slides and slumps. These simulations feature rigid or deforming SMFs with a Gaussian cross section, translating down a plane slope. In each case, the SMF center of mass motion is expressed as a function o...

Mass transport events and their tsunami hazard

Mass transport events, such as those from submarine landslides, volcanic flank collapse at convergent margins and on oceanic islands, and subaerial failure are reviewed and found to be all potential tsunami sources. The intensity and frequency of the tsunamis resulting is dependent upon the source. Most historical records are of devastating tsunamis from volcanic collapse at convergent margins....

Pacific Basin tsunami hazards associated with mass flows in the Aleutian arc of Alaska

We analyze mass-flow tsunami generation for selected areas within the Aleutian arc of Alaska using results from numerical simulation of hypothetical but plausible mass-flow sources such as submarine landslides and volcanic debris avalanches. The Aleutian arc consists of a chain of volcanic mountains, volcanic islands, and submarine canyons, surrounded by a low-relief continental shelf above abo...

Preliminary Study of Possible Tsunami Hazards in Taiwan Region

Tsunami is one of the most severe natural disasters faced by regions around the rim of oceans, usually generated by submarine earthquakes (usually with magnitude larger than 7.0), volcano eruptions and large landslides. Submarine earthquakes are the most common tsunami sources. As we know, the prediction of an earthquake is still not satisfactory with today's technologies, in fact, for most ear...

Some Aspects of Energy Balance and Tsunami Generation by Earthquakes and Landslides

Tsunamis are generated by displacement or motion of large volumes of water. While there are several documented cases of tsunami generation by volcanic eruptions and landslides, most observed tsunamis are attributed to earthquakes. Kinematic models of tsunami generation by earthquakes — where specified fault size and slip determine seafloor and sea-surface vertical motion — quantitatively explai...
